Before I post the “before” pictures of the bunk bed, I wanted to call attention to the amazing comforter covers Dana made using the cutest owl fabric on the planet. Combined with some colorful prints, the comforter covers have the appearance of modern quilts. Emme loves to point out the individual owls, telling stories about what each one is up to. And I love to snuggle beneath them. Giving your kid a full-size bed is dangerous, because now I get halfway through a book and practically fall asleep, tiny elbows urging my ribs to remain awake for one more page.

This is what the bed looked like before. It was in OK condition for being about 60 years old, but we wanted to give it a modern update. And Emme wanted white.

Plus we wanted something more City than City Slickers. Goodbye grub wagon.

Another look at the finished product. Already rumpled and littered with stuff. I had to use a 2 by 4 on the wall side to brace the bed and make it sturdy. It wobbled and shook with even the slightest touch. The 2 by 4, combined with an internal bracing system using automotive studs wrapped in fabric and inserted into the posts, made it solid as a rock. I still need to work on the guard, however. It’s a little wobbly, still. But so far, no broken bones — yeah!

As you can tell, she was pretty excited about the idea of a big girl bunk bed. And we installed it just in time. The poor kid has official swine flu, so we’ve been spending our days snuggling. Much, much more comfortable than folding my knees up to my chest to fit into a conversion crib.
